Snow – your enemy when riding and a nice thing for Christmas

Snow_on_the_mountains_of_Southern_CaliforniaIt is that time of the year when we take some time off, gather with the family and dream about white Christmas… White – means that there is a substantial amount of snow available for your disposal to ski, make snowman, start snowball fights and create angels in the snow… All of that is great and all but if you were planning a ride on your bike – that white fluff on the road will not make you very happy… I cannot imagine why someone would go biking when the snow is on the roads unless they have some sort of a tire mod in place…

I have read about some people putting screws into their tires so that they can go crazy on ice… never tried it but maybe one day… 😉 Anyway. we are talking about snow… As a biker I try to avoid it as much as possible. Saying that you cannot always predict the weather and you could be far away from home when the snow starts… And ride back home may be really challenging… Fortunately in London it is not very often for roads to be completely unusable. Usually the roads are gritted and cleaned well enough to be relatively safe.

If you end up riding in icy/snowy conditions try sticking to the main roads. The more cars use them the better. Those roads are usually cleaned and gritted more often AND the traffic worms up the road melting snow and ice. Saying that be careful of the slush too…  I had some really scary moments riding on slush… Obviously it is the turns that are usually the most dangerous… It makes your butt to clench when you feel your wheel slipping in the turn… Whatever you do – do not grab your brakes though…

So check the weather before going for a ride this time of the year and I hope you will never need to ride in snow unless by choice on your snowmobile 😉

Ho, Ho, Ho… suck this snow 😉
